Crate Training
A Safe and Comforting Space
A crate is an important tool for house training, structure, and providing your puppy with a safe space of their own. Here at Clinch River Labradoodles, we begin introducing your puppy to the concept of the crate early on. By the time your puppy goes home at 8 weeks, they will have spent time in a crate and started to understand it as a calm, positive space—but they will not be fully crate trained yet. That process will continue with you at home.
We recommend starting with a 24–30 inch crate, depending on your puppy’s expected adult size. The crate should offer enough room for them to stand up, turn around, and lie down comfortably, but not be so large that it encourages them to potty in one corner and sleep in another. Many crates come with adjustable dividers, which can be helpful as your puppy grows.
Keep in mind, you will likely need to purchase a larger crate as your Labradoodle grows toward their adult size—but starting with the right fit early on is key to successful crate training.

Grooming
A Key Part of Labradoodle Care
Grooming is a very important part of owning an Australian Labradoodle. Their beautiful, low-shedding coats require regular maintenance to keep them healthy and mat-free.
We highly recommend that you:
- Comb your puppy regularly, ideally several times a week, to prevent mats from forming.
- Invest in a good quality dematting comb or rake to gently work through tangles, especially in high-friction areas like behind the ears, under the legs, and around the collar.
Even if you plan to take your Labradoodle to a professional groomer, regular brushing at home will keep their coat in great condition and help your puppy get used to being handled—making grooming a stress-free experience for everyone.
We’ll provide a link to the dematting comb we personally recommend and use with our own dogs.

Crate & Playpen Setup
Creating Safe Spaces
When your puppy is in our home, they spend any time they are not being directly supervised in a puppy pen or crate. This is a safe and structured way to allow your puppy to explore their environment without full access to your home, and it helps prevent accidents, chewing, and other unwanted behaviors.
This method is also highly recommended by BAXTER & Bella as part of their positive training program. The combination of a crate for rest time and a pen for safe, supervised play and downtime is ideal for establishing good habits early on.
We will send you a link to the exact pen we use, which has worked well for our puppies in both safety and convenience.
